The Turkey Diaries: New Year's Eve Aftermath

Just like many people over the age of twenty-one, Jeremy and I spent the first day of the new year sleeping in and recovering from the previous night's activities. We didn't wake up in time for the hostel breakfast so we decided to wander around the streets of Istanbul, still covered in last night's filth, searching for some decent food options and pomegranate juice (which I dreamt about that night, hence my determination to find some). Jeremy was normal and ended up picking up a Simit (which is the equivalent of a bagel in Turkey) while I opted for another one of those delicious fish sandwiches on the Galata bridge.

We headed back to the hostel to rest up and tuck ourselves back into bed for a few more hours. We didn't leave the confines of the hostel again until it was almost 5 pm where I managed to look somewhat decent and snap some outfit shots. It was a lovely night to just wander around Galata, which is the neighborhood our hostel was in, and we found ourselves on Istiklal Street. Istiklal Street is one of Istanbul's most prominent pedestrian roads (imagine 5th avenue in NYC without the cars) and we took in all of the restaurants, shops, and thousands of other people strolling along.

Jeremy and I stumbled upon a random restaurant that we decided to try out and we ended up treating ourselves to some of the most delicious kebabs I've ever had. If you ever find yourself walking along Istiklal Street, definitely stop by. One of the fellow restaurant goers thought we looked lost and confused and ended up recommending one of her favorite dishes. Apparently she and her friends had taken the ferry from the Asian side of Istanbul just to come to this restaurant. Who knew we had landed upon a hidden gold mine?

  4. The picture of the necklace on the stone is fantastic....you should moonlight as a photographer for artisanal retailers.
And that's a very cool outfit. I'd NEVER think to put those pieces together, but they work really well. Fancy!
