It's been almost half a year since Jasmine and I last did a Dynamic Duo post. The past summer has been incredibly hectic for the both of us dealing with personal issues and dramatic life changes. She started up graduate school and student teaching while I moved into New York City to shorten my work commute. Our Dynamic Duo posts came to a halt until one day...Modcloth had an epic sale. Despite both of our shopping bans, in an effort to save money, we separately hit up the sale and snagged a few items for cheap. And when we found out we both broke our bans, we compared items and discovered that we both bought the same exact, striped top. Destiny? I think so.

I can't wait until our next Dynamic Duo. We're thinking of reusing an old Dynamic Duo item - are there any that you want to see styled up again? Let us know and we'll style up whatever gets the most votes (that is, if I have it in NYC with me). ;)

I went home last weekend and it turns out my friend Kirsten, who recently moved to Philadelphia, was back home as well! We decided to catch up and she helped me run some errands that I had to do for work. While we were out and about the downtown area, she snapped a few shots of my outfit (which is obviously errand-running appropriate). My face isn't present in any of the pictures because I was feeling pretty insecure about it while editing them. We all have those days.

Even though I've only been living on my own for almost a month now, it was super nice to go home, see my family, and get some home cooking in my stomach. Noms. I slept way more than I do in the city and it was nice not waking up at the break of dawn to the sounds of cars zooming by and garbage trucks going about their usual business. But speaking of my apartment, I think I'm almost done with decorating my room so I'll be taking pictures to show you guys! Don't hold your breath though, it's still pretty barren.

Fashionista Fundraiser for Endometriosis Awareness

One of my good blogger friends, Diane, was recently diagnosed with Endometriosis only a few months ago. For those of you who don't know, Endometriosis is a female health disorder where cells from the lining of the womb grow in other areas of the body. Unfortunately, there is no cure. Fortunately, there is a way to control it.

Diane bravely shared her journey with her readers when she had to undergo surgery to remove a large cyst (endometrioma) in her ovary and now she wants to spread awareness so other women don't have to undergo the same thing. I'm joining up with Diane, and a few other bloggers, to spread the word and raise funds for the Endometriosis Foundation of America (EFA). Every little bit toward the cause helps and you can follow the link below to donate:

If you or anyone you know has been diagnosed with Endometriosis, feel free to share your story with us. :)

Garlic & Herb Crusted Pizza Recipe

Garlic & Herb Crusted Pizza Recipe

My roommate, Rob, and I tried our hand at baking a pizza the other weekend after we saw some Garlic & Herb pizza dough at Trader Joe's. Personally, I can't resist anything that has garlic in it and you can't go wrong with herbs. Am I right? We piled on as many vegetables as we could find in our fridge, plenty of Mozzarella, and we had a quick and easy way to celebrate the weekend. I used to think making a pizza involved a lot of hard work - turns out, once you've already got the dough, it's a piece of cake! Or, in this case, 8 pieces of pizza! ;)

Ingredients
1 bag of pizza dough
1 cup of chopped onions
1 chopped garlic clove
1 roma tomato
1/2 sweet red pepper
1 1/2 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
1 handful of spinach leaves
1/2 cup of mushrooms
3 basil leaves
1 cup of tomato sauce
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Flour

First, we preheated the oven to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Rob was in charge of the vegetables, so he chopped up some onions and one clove and garlic and simmered them in some olive oil. He also sliced up one roma tomato, some red pepper, and two mushrooms. I'm anti-mushroom so he only covered half the pie with some of those bad boys. I was in charge of the construction of the pizza so I pounded out that dough like a pizza expert (with some flour sprinkled on the surface), evenly poured on the sauce, and very generously scattered the cheese (you can never have too much cheese on pizza). We ripped up some spinach leaves as a finishing touch and then popped our pizza into the oven.

Our only mistake was that we only baked our pizza for 8 minutes, since that's what the packaging suggested. My friend Stephen, who's an epic food blogger, later recommended that we let the pizza bake for at least 15 minutes. Whoops! At least it was still delicious. I think I'll be trying out his pesto pizza recipe next.

It's Not Easy Being Green

It's raining colored pants over here on JennifHsieh! I can't seem to get enough of them lately and I'm trying to hold back from wearing them, especially since I only have two colors and I'm sure it would be very noticeable if I alternated between green and maroon everyday. This pair is my favorite though, mainly because my favorite color is green and I'm loving the zippers on the legs. I like to think they release my inner badass but that's probably not the case. At all.

Walking around New York City always makes me want to fill my arms with fresh flowers and scatter them all over my apartment. Does anyone else have a similar urge? I keep reminding myself that I'm a plant killer and that any plant that comes under my care ends up wilting by the end of the day. I most recently bought a small basil plant to satisfy my constant basil cravings. People kept saying it would be a super easy plant to take care of but it's wilting already. What am I doing wrong? No matter how green my pants get, my thumb will never be the same color.

Stick 'Em Up!

Stick 'Em Up!

In preparation for my fashion week adventures earlier last week, Hollywood Fashion Secrets sent me a bag full of emergency fashion gear! The star of the collective gear was their newly released Tape Gun, which dispenses fashion tape that solves your last minute fashion emergencies. It's different than the usual fashion tape since you can choose the length you cut off! For example, if you need to fix a hem, you can use one piece of tape, all the way around! Personally, I used it to keep my sweater strategically tucked into my skirt without it falling out. I also felt like a little badass whipping it out to save the day.

A few of the other products also came to my rescue, especially during Fashion's Night Out where every store was populated with shoppers. I loved their Oil Blotting Sheets which kept me looking as good as new throughout the night. I'm definitely keeping some of these products in my bag with me at all times, just in case. :)

The Feast of San Genarro

I spent last Saturday morning visiting the Feast of San Genarro which is an annual salute to the Patron Saint of Naples. It's held in Little Italy and Mulberry street is littered with people looking to get their hands on delicious Italian food, desserts, and souvenirs. Although I'm a sucker for anything I can eat, my friends and I didn't stay for long and opted to get Pho from a restaurant a few blocks away. Being that it's right next to Chinatown, it was hard to resist the allure of Asian cuisine (and I'm not just saying that because it reminds me of home).

On a more superficial note, I finally got my hands on some colored denim! I've been craving a pair or two for the longest time and I recently got them in my two favorite shades: maroon and forest green. I'll be debuting my green pair next time, which I'm absolutely in love with. It makes me feel like Kermit the frog in the best possible way.

A Ward's Island Sunday Afternoon

September 17, 2012

A Ward's Island Sunday Afternoon

This past weekend was absolutely amazing - mainly because it's the first weekend in a long time where I didn't find myself working. On Sunday, my roommate Rob and I traveled downtown to Union Square to check out the Greenmarket there. Turns out, we should've checked the Greenmarket hours since they're only on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. The trip downtown was ultimately worth it since there was a Trader Joe's just a block away. Jackpot.

Since the weather was so nice, Rob and I decided to walk across Ward's Island bridge when we got back uptown (which is directly behind our apartment) and sit by the East River. How lucky are we? I still pinch myself to believe that this is my backyard. We brought some reading material and just relaxed with the sun beaming down upon us and the wind gently keeping the heat at bay. I could get used to this.

I had brought my camera along to capture some gorgeous shots of Manhattan, but I made the mistake of leaving my memory card in the reader. A photographer's worst nightmare. Luckily I still had my phone on me so I could snap some shots on Instagram. To follow along more of my adventures, follow me there. My username is jennifhsieh. :)

It's the start of another work week and I'm pretty jealous that my two roommates have the day off. Both of them are New York Teaching Fellows, one teaches first grade and the other teaches tenth, so they have off today and tomorrow for Rosh Hashanah. I'm just glad I love being at work, although waking up on Mondays is always rough.

But to start off the week right, Miinto.com is offering my readers 8% off any purchase on their site using the code "weloveyou". I'm collaborating with them on creating a Style Guide with my personal picks in a few days and I've been addicted to browsing through their selection. My favorites for fall right now have got to be the Daisy Grunge Tank, Denim Vest, and the Cozy Wool Cardigan. Especially the cardigan. If you pick anything up, let me know what you get! :)

Review: She Wears It Well

Review: She Wears It Well

A few weeks ago I got to test out the new Anastasia Beverly Hills eye palette, She Wears It Well, which was released for Fall 2012. I'm usually baffled when it comes to eye palettes, especially bigger ones like this where there's plenty of shades to choose from. Lucky for me (and my lack of make-up expertise), there was a look book included with various looks using different color combinations. Since I was heading to work, I decided to try out the "Cut A Rug" look, which revolves around the Almond shade. It's your classic cut crease with a winged look coming out from the bottom lash line.

Turns out, it was perfect for my work day and the eyeshadow didn't smudge. I didn't look too overdone and I got a few compliments throughout the day (which is always a plus). I'll be trying out their "Night Owl" look next, which is their version of the smokey eye (far right in the above picture).

It's only available in stores for a few more days but you can find it on Sephora.com. If you're looking for the perfect neutral eye palette that's beautifully priced, definitely check it out.

The Time I Fell in Love with a Sweater

This is the outfit I wore to the Tumbler & Tipsy Fashion show a few nights ago. Now that the Fall weather is rolling around I'm starting to get super excited about wearing chunky knits, rich autumn hues, and (soon enough) tights! To celebrate the start of the chillier season, I picked up this slouchy, slightly baggy sweater from H&M and I can't seem to stop wearing it. It's actually a slight problem. I love that it's baggy with sleeves that are just a tad bit too long. I'm a sucker for anything oversized (for the most part).

I'm been super behind lately on updating my blog because I never seem to have a solid fifteen minutes to sit down and write. Actually, I seem to have enough time to sit down for an hour to watch Mad Men...but that's a different story. How can you resist Don Draper? I've got a ton of posts and outfits to share with you guys so be excited. Be very excited.

Now that I've been living in the city for two weeks, I'm really starting to adjust to being a "New Yorker" (calling myself a New Yorker probably just lost me two points). I still have to explore my neighborhood more and figure out where the bars and shops are, but I've got plenty of time! I actually had an apartment warming party on Friday and a good handful of my friends made the trek up to East Harlem (which I thoroughly appreciated). We walked quite a while to find some bars, but that's mainly because I didn't do my research. It was fun nevertheless and I'm really glad I got to see everyone. Cheers to amazing friends. :)
