California Road Trip | Day 6/10: Carrizo Plains
Two months later, and can you believe I'm still only halfway through our California Road Trip posts? Talk about slacking off; guess I really got into that west coast mindset, huh?
As we got closer and closer to southern California, we came across a crossroad. We had two choices: we could (1) continue to drive along the Pacific Coast Highway and make our way down to Santa Barbara or (2) take a inland detour and drive through the Carrizo Plain. We were pretty torn since I really wanted to see the beauty of Santa Barbara and he wanted to see the beauty of the Carrizo Plain. After wasting an hour just trying to decide, we decided to opt for the Carrizo Plain to hopefully get a glimpse of the super bloom, which is where there are rainbow fields of flowers for miles, and miles.
Unfortunately, we were a little late and we only saw the yellow blooms but I was still blown away by how far the flowers stretched into the distance. But then once I got enough of the flowers, we realized getting out of the plains would be a struggle. A struggle with beautiful scenery, but a struggle nevertheless. A lot of the roads weren't developed and, since we didn't have 4-wheel drive, we ended up driving mile after mile at a 15 mph pace. I'm pretty sure I started to lose my mind toward the end and I was just ready to paved roads and civilization.
