Guest Post: Paper Quid

Hello to the lovely readers of JennifHsieh! A really big thank you to Jen for letting me have a chance to blog here while she's away saving the world in New Orleans (Shout out to Circle K International and all they do to make the world a better place; they're truly amazing).

Before I say anything else, I would like to apologize for the atrocious self-portraits that are about to grace this post. In addition to not having a tripod in my apartment, I got these long stares from the little old ladies prancing about the park I went to for the photoshoot, and it made me a bit edgy and eager to finish. I'm new at this, sorry!

My name is Karen, and I blog over at the (very) young Paper Quid. I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, but I am Taiwanese by blood. I now live in Taiwan (an island famous for its ridiculously good food) and I'm currently an undergraduate studying biological sciences at NTU, or Taida, for any Chinese-speaking readers out there :)

In general, I think Taiwanese girls prefer more complicated styles: by that, I mean clothing with bright colours, patterns and lots of layers. In my opinion, their style of dressing makes them appear younger. The brighter, the better, and Taiwanese night markets are famous for the variety of jewelry, trinkets, coloured barrettes, and hair-tie stands, with hundreds of patterns and styles available for your perusal. Street stores and night markets are practically bursting at the seems with colour and (sometimes strangely) cut clothing.

I'm just the complete opposite: keeping it simple is my life-long motto. With that said, I can be rather boring when I dress: I try to stick to soft, solid colours like beige, black, and navy, colours that don't easily go wrong, and if I decide to wear an item that's complicated, it's likely going to be the only patterned item in my entire outfit that day. My favourite place to window-shop is J.Crew; I just love the classicality and simplicity of their designs.

With that being said, I apologise for the mundane outfit. I try hard to keep everything as simple as possible. This shirt is one of the very few items I've purchased in Taiwan; as you can see, even the most basic clothing comes with a big black bow tied around it. I don't particularly enjoy shopping here because the storekeepers constantly hound you and keep on your back about clothes they think would look "cute" on you. Also, the more time you spend in a store, the more you are expected to purchase something. I'm also a lousy haggler because I just feel meek and shy when I'm talking money. As a result, I only venture into clothing stores when my parents fly over here to visit me and offer to take me shopping, because then they do the talking for me! I always took my shopping freedom in California shopping centers for granted until I came here.

I think in Taiwanese society, people still think flip-flops are a subtle sign of sloppiness. In California, for instance, I could walk out wearing flip-flops with a skirt and not think twice about it, but the few times I chose to wear a skirt/flip-flop combination to school, I literally felt people staring at my feet on the bus, then working their eyes up to my skirt. Oops. As a result, I've been wearing sandals, though this pair is currently the only pair I own (I guess closed backs make the big difference) and close-toed shoes more often since I started living here, just so I appear like I put some effort into my shoe choice when I leave the apartment in the morning.

I just finished a marathon of eight final examinations yesterday (Taiwanese semesters are super, super long!) so I slept until almost noon today to recharge. When I finally got up, I forgot that I was planning to shoot my photos today, and sleeping late does wonderful things to my hair; it just had to choose today to be mischievous and stick out in strange places!

Anyone have any exciting plans for the summer? For me, summer is the time for plenty of strawberry lemonade, casual reading, and getting two shades tanner from being out in the sun. For the next few days, I plan to finish the second season of BBC's Sherlock (it's all about Benedict Cumberbatch!), clean my room, and play the piano, which I have been terrible at practising during the semester. As for long-term plans, I really want to get through Anna Karenina this summer, a vow I made during my junior year of high school; after almost three years, I have fulfilled about 250 pages of that promise. So productive.

Happy summer to everyone, and have a good day!

Much love,
Karen

Guest Post: Kirsten

Hi! My name is Kirsten and I have had the distinct pleasure of being besties with Jen since 7th grade. One of the perks of being Jen's friend is that I get to be her photographer every now and then. Some of my favorite photo shoots can be found here, here, and, most recently, here.

Now, ever since our first abandoned barn excursion, Jen and I like to go on what we call "adventures". We pick a day, do some research, and find an abandoned location for a photo shoot. I recently got my own camera and have been dabbling in photography, so these adventures have been loads of fun. Just Jen and I creeping around quiet, run-down buildings, silently snapping pictures of the rubble and decay.

This old train car was probably one of my favorite adventures to date. You can find Jen's outfit post from this day here. It was hot and muggy, but the train was very different than any other building we had been to before. After climbing up a rusty set of stairs, it was really neat to walk through the car and read all the graffiti that covered the walls. There just something so peaceful about exploring a place that people forgot about long ago. It makes you wonder what it's story is and who was there before you.

I can't wait to see where our next adventure will take us. I hope you enjoyed my post and thank you for taking the time to read it! If you want to see more of my attempts at photography, here's my tumblr. It's a random assortment of more urban exploration, photography class assignments, and glimpses into my life. Feel free to stop by

Guest Posting on The Ocean in Your Bedroom

Hi Everyone! Today I'm actually guest posting for Sarah on her blog, The Ocean in Your Bedroom. I've been following Sarah's blog for quite some time now and I love following along in her adventures. She always has the dreamiest pictures and her looks are romantic. Definitely follow along with her!

On Sarah's blog, I'm sharing how I've remixed one of my favorite items over the past year. You guys probably recognize my rust-colored Zara skirt with the scalloped pockets. I can never get enough of it (and I hope you guys can't either). Head over to her blog to see some of my favorite outfits featuring the skirt. :)

Guest Post: Despising Life is So Passe

(dress worn as shirt- f21, skirt- banana republic, shoes- bamboo)

Hello all you wonderful people, you! I hope you all are getting through your weeks quite all right.
As Jen is one of the first bloggers I really communicated with when I first started blogging, it is always a pleasure to do these guest posts for her while she's away. And whenever I do, I make sure to add a hint of Jen style. The simple top paired with a cute skirt, heck yeah, that has Jen written all over it!

This color-blocked pleated skirt is one of my absolute favorites. You guys, you have no idea how long I stalked it for at work. Until I gave in. Gosh darn it, I couldn't help myself. That's something I've been saying quite a bit these days--like after I consumed a half a dozen chocolate chip cookies, or didn't stop at just one burrito. Guilty. So guilty.

It's almost the weekend. Hang on there! And have a wonderful day! ♥

Hey everyone! I'm Erica Leigh of Sweets and Hearts. I'm delighted to be guest posting for Jen while she's away, as I've been following her blog for some time now.

I thought it would be fun to share a recent outfit of mine that was never posted on the blog. Like Jen, sometimes I like to keep things pretty simple, but still feminine and preppy. I paired a nude bow blouse with high-waisted paperbag shorts (which I've worn so many times already in the past few weeks I've had them -- they're super comfy!), and some heels I thrifted a while ago. Since the outfit was fairly neutral, I added a bright red satchel.

I'm so excited for summer! I can't wait to wear all my shorts and espadrilles.

What are you excited to wear this season?

Guest Post: The Ocean in Your Bedroom

Hello, lovely readers of JennifHsieh! I'm so happy to have the chance to guest post for Jen on her wonderful blog! My name is Sarah and I blog over at The Ocean in Your Bedroom. I love cheesy junk food, having TV show marathons, vintage dresses, and I'm obsessed with traveling the big, beautiful world. Those are really the only things you need to know about me.

Like Jen, I mostly blog about personal style and my crazy little life. Last year, I packed up that crazy, little life with my brand-new husband and moved from Newfoundland, Canada, all the way to Northern Scotland. Needless to say it was a bit of an adjustment moving across an ocean! Aberdeen has changed a lot of my daily life and, especially, the way I blog.

I thought a fun way to introduce myself to you would be to do an outfit post, and show you around Aberdeen a little at the same time!
The first thing you need to know about Aberdeen is that it has been dubbed "the Granite City," and boy, it lives up to its name! Everything is grey, absolutely everything - even the weather. That makes photo shoots kind of challenging; it's hard not to seem boring and repetitive! Not exactly how you want to come off as a style blogger, right? But it makes you appreciate the little bits of colour and interest that are around, whether it's an old-school British phone booth or the flags strung up for the Queen's jubilee.

I took these photos on Union Street, which is the centre of town and basically the farthest I'm willing to venture from my apartment. No, I'm not that lazy, but everything you need is around here! This is where all the big stuff happens, like Christmas tree lighting and parades and the Olympic torch relay (which was just last week).

It's also where random dudes on bicycles will sneak into your pictures and scare the pants off you. See above photo for reference.

(I just thought the sign was pretty funny! Another Aberdonian treat.)

If you ever visit my little corner of the Internet you'll soon notice that I love to complain about the Scottish weather. It's a frequent theme in my posts; the rain, the cold, the vitamin D deficiency, the rain... oh the rain. Being from Newfoundland, which is not known for its fabulous weather, people expected me to handle Aberdeen's one season a little better than I did. But what can I say? In a grey city it'd be nice to see a blue sky now and again!

This weather is why, in the middle of June, I am wearing a chunky cardi and cable-knit socks. Sad, isn't it? I mean, it's not all bad for a girl who loves tights more than anything and has a great collection of winter hats (that's me!). I guess it would be nice to wear this romper the way it was intended- sleeveless, possibly frolicking in the sun - but layers just give more opportunities to accessorize!

Well, I've rambled quite enough for now, and I think these pictures have captured the essence of my daily wanderings. I hope you've enjoyed your little introduction to me, and to Aberdeen! It's a funny little place, but we make do. If you're ever in the area, look me up! Stop by! Let's hang! I'll have absolutely no idea what to do, but it's nice to be nice. :)

Thanks so much for reading, and thanks to Jen for letting me do this! Have a great day, all.
Sarah K.

Guest Post: Jeremy (Bended Brains)

A lot of people ask me what it's like to be one of the standard photographers for Jennifhsieh. "Isn't it really challenging? How do you managed to balance taking such beautiful - nay, perfect - pictures of Jen while at the same time being able to still dress and pose so amazingly eloquently in every fashion shoot? Don't you deserve your own fashion blog?"

These are the types of questions I have to deal with everyday, just walking down the street going about my own business. I always respond in the same way, while looking them deep in their eyes. "Yes," I soothingly murmur, "yes, it is incredibly difficult." Not a lot of people think about it, but as a photographer I have to get into all sorts of daring poses to get just the right angle to fully capture the light and Jen's radiance.

What types of poses, you ask? Well, standing for one - that's really the main pose. Sometimes, though, I have to squat or even sit down. I tell you, it is amazingly difficult on the knees. And don't even get me started on the dangers I face at the locations of our shoots. One time Jen wanted to take pictures when it was almost freezing out; it was very extreme. I'm just glad we both managed to survive. These are the types of challenges you face, though, when you commit yourself to being a photographer for a big time fashion blogger.

I just hope all of you reading this appreciate the momentous lengths all your photographers go to for you before it's too late. The average life span for us isn't much more than thirty years due to "on-site accidents."

If you ever need a new photographer, though, or a good laugh make sure to check out my blog here.

Guest Post: Lifesize Paperdoll

DSC_2976 DSC_2978 DSC_2983

Am I allowed to mix navy, mint, and coral!? Well, it happened yesterday somewhat on a whim when I decided I just wanted to wear every single one of my favorite items: my favorite eyelet skirt I scored for three dollars at an Urban Outfitters sale, my favorite mint flats, my favorite sunglasses, my favorite bow printed top that's perfectly feminine and sweet, and my favorite thrifted purse I got for a dollar. I've a big believer in having fun with clothes. Often times, "fun" takes priority over practicality or flattery in my life and I think that at age 19, I'm lucky to be able to do that before I'm in a place where I have to look the part of a professional adult! I won't always be able to wear crazy ridiculous colors together and I know that, so I'm just having fun while I can. It doesn't always work, but that's where I learn!

Anyways, hello! My name is Maggie and I am the blogger behind Lifesize Paperdoll! I was so so excited when Jen asked for guest bloggers and I knew I could fill in. She filled in for me a long time ago and I remember thinking how completely amazing it was that a blogger of her caliber would guest blog on my little ol' blog! I'm so happy to return the favor. It's always a blast to work with other bloggers and be inspired with fresh content!

Lately, I've been going through a bit of a transitional period of my young adult life as a 19 almost 20 year old. It's been kind of scary and unsettling, but I kind of love the idea that everything happens for a reason and unplanned things that go awry are just an opportunity for growth. I guess I kind of like change? I've spent the last couple of months doing everything for me and actually making some of the decisions I was before scared to make. But when you have nothing left to lose, why not go for it? Time to myself finally means doing all the things I usually make excuses out of doing; telling myself I'm "too busy" to do them. I want to be a writer,  I want to learn to sew, I want to read Rory Gilmore's list of 250 favorite books, I want to walk to the park alone and read on a picnic blanket all day long, I want to go to a movie by myself, I want to apply to a crazy internship I know I'll never get in a thousand years in New York City or San Francisco, I want to save my money for something amazing, and I want to spend time every single day working towards something. It's true what they say: you make your own happiness. I dare you all, though I don't have much clout as just a teenager, to do one thing today, say one thing today, you're afraid of. It's always worth it.

Following Washington's Footsteps

Jeremy and I ventured to Washington Rock State Park in North Jersey to take these pictures before continuing with the rest of our plans later that day. We went there together once before but it was too dark to snap any shots. My favorite part about this park is the fact that you can see the most breath-taking view of New Jersey. I wish I captured it on camera, but for now you'll just have to trust me. You can see the entire New York City Skyline on the left side. And you can see the Rutgers University football stadium (in Central Jersey) on the right side, which is an hour away from the city.

George Washington himself stood in this Park to monitor the British Troop movements in 1777. How crazy is that? My favorite part about living on the east coast is definitely all of the history surrounding it.

I received this cardigan from Sugarlips Apparel the other day and I'm in love. It's such a light and breezy fabric so it's easy for me to bring it around for those warm summer days and cool summer nights. Summer staple? DEFINITELY.

Also, I'll be leaving for New Orleans tomorrow morning! It's going to be an early start (I have to leave my house at 3:30 AM) and I haven't even started thinking about packing. I'm super excited to see all of my Circle K International friends though. I haven't really had a lot of time to do any community service lately so I'm super excited for the first half of the week. It'll be full of Habitat for Humanity builds and March of Dimes mural painting! I'll be sure to come back with plenty of pictures. Bourbon Street, here I come! Stay tuned for a new guest post every single day next week! Excited? You should be.

Also, don't forget to enter my Footzyroll Flats giveaway! I'll be picking a winner on July 1st, when I come back! :)
